Doug Redd, PhD, associate director of applications with the Biomedical Informatics Center (BIC) and assistant research professor in the Department of Clinical Research and Leadership at the George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences passed away on June 23, 2020 from a heart attack.
A seasoned researcher, project supervisor, and software engineer with extensive experience in natural language processing, machine learning, and deep learning in the clinical data domain, Redd, 51, joined GW in 2015 to lend his expertise on state-of-the art informatics research projects.
“Doug was highly respected for his skills and intelligence by his colleagues,” wrote Qing Zeng, PhD, director of BIC and professor of clinical research and leadership in an announcement from the department. Zeng served as Redd’s advisor during his doctoral candidacy at the University of Utah and worked with him for more than 10 years. “He was as brilliant as he was humble. He was as capable as he was kind. We did not just lose a colleague, we lost a dear friend.”
